It Began with a ‘Doyle’

Doylestown began in the 1740s with an inn, founded by William Doyle. Due to its position on a major intersection in an agricultural area, the inn gradually developed a village surrounding it. That village was appropriately deemed “Doylestown” and eventually earned the County Seat. The Doylestown Inn, which still exists today and is a focal point of the town center, has entertained such esteemed guests as Henry Ford, Pearl Buck, James Michener and Oscar Hammerstein, to name a few.Fonthill, Doylestown PA homes for sale

Doylestown is also home to a number of museums, parks, and other attractions that highlight and cherish its rich history. Visit the towering castle that houses the Michener Museum, a stunningly renovated historic site that contains the most extensive collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist Paintings.

You can also stop in at Fonthill, the private home of archeologist, historian, ceramist and collector Henry Mercer. Wander through his 44-room castle, which is elaborately adorned with his famous handcrafted tiles. The Moravian Tile Works, which produced these exquisite tiles, is a working history museum and is located next door. But if none of those activities suit you, simply stroll through our town and enjoy its Victorian architecture, delightful shops and wonderful restaurants.
